Main Road Old Town Hall and School

Description

Academy Building, later the Town Hall and School. Originally constructed as a private educational academy. Later (see Chronology) Town hall was upstairs, school was downstairs.

Color photos show where the building used to be. The granite front step still marks where the entry used to be.

CHRONOLOGY:

Construction: Date unknown

1870 Apr 19: Date of deed transferring ownership from Ralph S. Brown to the Town of Granville. The building was purchased for $400 and became Town Hall, which had formerly been in the olf James Cooley law office building across the street (the small saltbox house still standing). The old town hall office was turned over to Raplh Broan for $50 as part of the deal.

1871: The Center School District begins use of a portion of the building as a school. Eventually the students were transported to the village school which was located at the corner of Granby Road and Water Street (date unrecorded).

1915: The building is condemned as unsafe by Commonwealth officials.

1924: The property is sold to Holland Stevenson.

1925: The building is razed.
