Description
Josiah Swett, M.D. (1857-1916) moved to Granville in the 1870's and started his medical practice. In 1880 he married Bertha Huddleston (1861-1928) who had been born in nearby Granby, CT.
This photo (about 1888) shows the family in front of 488 Main Road, Granville, the house they lived in during their Granville years. The family moved to New Hartford, CT around 1891.
Pictured are (L-R):
Walter Swett (1884 - 1954)
Bertha (Huddleston) Swett (1861 - 1928)
Josiah Swett, M.D. (1857 - 1916)
John Guy Swett (1887 - 1955) (in baby carriage)
Maid (unidentified)
Paul Plummer Swett (1882 - 1950) (on horse)
Unidentified, possibly Arthur Huddleston (1857 - 1919), Bertha (Huddleston) Swett's brother.
Josiah's son Paul later wrote a collection of essays which were published in the book, "Jockey Corners Remembrances" in 1997. The book recall's his memories as a boy in Granville. He is sitting on the horse on the left side of the photo.
Paul Swett's book of Granville memories from the 1880's is available in the Granville Library Historical Room.
Paul Swett, M.D. (1882-1950) loved horses and devoted a section of his book to describing the various horses that the family owned, along with the adventures and misadventures they encountered together. The horse on the left in this picture could well be "Gypsy", the family's toughest and most trusted steed. Paul's description of Gypsy appears here courtesy of Steven C. Swett, Paul's grandson.
