Fire photos from Facebook, October 30, 2019. Statement from the Granville Fire Department:

"This morning [Oct. 30, 2019] at 7 AM tones went off for a structure fire on Granby Road. Upon arrival crews found heavy flames coming from three windows on the second floor front of the house. Granville PD was on scene, with the homeowners who confirmed all occupants were out of the house safely. Granville engine one and Granville tanker one were first on scene, two hand lines were stretched, and while crews prepared to enter the building a quick external attack was made on the fire through the windows, followed immediately by an aggressive interior attack where the fire was extinguished quickly. There were no injuries to the occupants or firefighters on scene. Overhaul by GFD and Southwick FD, and Investigation by the state fire marshal were completed and crews left the scene around noon. Our sincere thanks to our mutual aid partners, and our best wishes for the family." The family cat, Star, did not survive.

A Happy Ending: On October 30, 2020 the following was posted by Colleen Carpenter Giroux on Facebook, reprinted here with permission:

"One year ago today I was rudely awoken, not by my alarm clock, but by what sounded like an explosion, glass breaking, an orange glow I could see through my closed eyes, and heat on my face.

Survival and Mama Bear mode kicked in immediately and I yelled to my husband to get out of the house, and got my kids up and ran them to my parents house, which is just two houses away, and called 911.

Chief Rick Rindels was on scene in seconds and was an amazing support in the coming hours, days and weeks! The fire department worked so quickly and efficiently to get the house and put out the fire! Without their bravery and call to action, my home would not be a home!

The American Red Cross was a blessing, along with fire department support from our surrounding towns. I later learned that the response time from the 911 call to when firefighters arrived was about 9 minutes, which is so amazing for our small town volunteer fire department!

This home was bought around 1972 by my grandmother, with so much love, was always a home full of love, and has been rebuilt with love. It has gone from an unbelievable disaster to a gorgeous, warm and inviting home. We’ve gone from what was “Gramma’s house”, to fire, smoke, heat and water damage to absolute bare bones and studs to painted walls and new floors! I look forward to moving back in and continue to fill the home with love!

Thank you to all our friends, family, neighbors and even strangers who have supported us at the beginning and through it all! We wouldn’t be where we are now without your kindness, selflessness, generosity and, of course, LOVE!"

The "after" photos are also from the October 30, 2020 post. Thank you Colleen, for preserving this wonderful old house and part of the character of the village green area.
