Local Remembrances:

Matt Jones recalls a story told by the Calvin family who lived here:

"Back in the late 1960’s, or early 1970’s the John Rose house was owned by Gene & Sharon Calvin. They were friends with my folks and had 2 or three kids but they were 10 or so years younger than us Jones kids. Anyway Mrs. Calvin, told us that one night a car failed to negotiate the corner, just past their house, slid off the road and got stuck. The driver was the only person in the car and was also very intoxicated. He stumbled up to the front of their house, read the sign “John Rose 1743” next to the front door and proceeded to try to wake up John Rose to get help by yelling “John!”, “Hey John! Wake up!” at the top of his lungs for quite a while." Needless to say John did not wake up and by morning the man and car were gone.

Relation

Refer to the book "Fannie's Diaries" published in 2003, written by Francis "Fannie" Minerva (Smith) Page and compiled by Sheri M. Barber. Fannie was married to Benjamin Franklin Page. The young couple bought the John Rose House in Granville from Levi Wells in 1865. Diary entries reflect life in Granville in the years immediately following the Civil War. A copy of the book is available for on site reading upon request at the Mabel Root Henry Historical Museum at the Granville Library,
