Everett O. Rockwell, (1923-2018), principal of the Granville Village School 1965-1984.
The following was received by Ed DuBois in 2024:
"I found this flyer in a box of photos, and rather than just throw it out I thought some might find it interesting, certainly a part of Granville's more recent history. The quality of the scan isn't great, but I expect the original was probably run off on the old Granville Village School mimeograph machine.
Though only about 45 years ago, it gives a small glimpse of how dedicated the late Everett Rockwell, longtime principal of GVS, was to our kids. Some will remember he took the older GVS students on a cross-country field trip, in a school bus, for many years. This was a note sent home just before departure in 1979. there is a hand written note from Mr. Rockwell, at the bottom, warning of possible difficulty with fuel, due to the 1979 oil crisis, and his contingency plan.
Many of these participants will be familiar....I'm sure some still live in the area, most would probably be approaching 59 or 60 now.
This portion of the itinerary includes traversing Colorado, Passing through Estes Park, east portal to Rocky Mountain National Park, where Anne and I now live. After leaving Hot Sulphur Springs, they would travel across the Park on Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved mountain pass in the U.S., crossing the Continental Divide at over 12,000', (and just 5 or 10 miles from our home today...they would have likely passed our present home after coming through the park!) Our son, Mitchell Willis, was on this trip.
I hope you find this an interesting snippet of life in Granville. (I found this picture of the bus, preparing to leave for the '81 trip, which our son Paul went on.) -Ed DuBois"
