Description

1936 photo titled "Terrett House" by Lorraine Tatro. This house was located on South Lane 2, now named Crest Lane. According to the 1912 Granville map it was home of Charles W. Terrett. The map indicates he owned 148 acres of land. He was the last of three generations of Terretts to own the farm.

Charles William Terrett (19 Mar 1839 - 20 May 1923) served in the Civil War, enlisting in 1861 in the 27th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. On 13 Jun 1864 he was wounded at the Battle of Cold Harbor (for more information on the battle CLICK HERE). Many Granville men served in the 27th Massachusetts Volunteers. For more information on the 27th CLICK HERE.

Charles Terrett's obituary is provided above.

According to the 1880 farm census the Terrett farm was valued at $3500. The farm paid $330 in 1879 for farm labor wages and had a total production value of $550.

Charles never married. At some point he moved to Westfield, where he died in 1923. He is buried in the West Granville Cemetery.

Charles' parents, George Washington Terrett (1800-1876) and Prudence Cheeseborough Denison (1799-1884) owned the farm before Charles. They are buried in the West Granville Cemetery. George Terrett donated $5 toward the establishment of the West Granville Academy in about 1835, and served as a Town Selectman in 1874.

Before that the farm was owned by G.W. Terrett's parents. William Terrett, Jr. was a ship's captain and merchant from Stonington, CT. who came to West Granville because Mrs Terrett didn't want their sons to grow up to follow in the seafaring life.

Captain Terrett paid $6,000 for the approximately 450 acre farm in 1819. He died in 1847 and is buried in West Granville cemetery.

The location of this house is thought to be approximately 42.066726,-72.931981 It is said that some of the paneling and other parts of the house were used in the restoration of at least two houses on Main Road in West Granville. It is believed that the house ultimately burned down.

We are fortunate that Lorraine Tatro thought to photograph this great house in 1936.

Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, a descendant of the Terretts, has kindly provided additional family photos and a detailed Terrett genealogy document that was published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register 173, (Spring 2019).
