This stone was found by Major Nelson* while plowing his field. The photo was taken by his son-in-law George Aldrich, probably around 1910.

It appears to have been carved. It has been speculated that it was carried by glaciers and deposited in West Granville when the glaciers melted.

The "baby mammoth" was kept on a rock at the Nelson farm yard but disappeared many years later and no trace has ever been found since. Have you seen it?

* Not the same Major Nelson who years later became widely known for finding a genie in a bottle.]]>
