Denizen Baldwin (1791-1814)
Description
An account of the resource
From research done by Corey Geske, 2020/21:
Lt. Jacob Baldwin's second oldest son, Denizen Baldwin (who inherited the west side of the family home in 1813) was the Master's Mate, USS Peacock, in one of the most publicized sea battles of the War of 1812. On a patrol off Cape Canaveral, Florida, the Peacock, with twenty 32-pounder carronades and two 12-pounders, defeated the recently launched HMS Epervier in late April 1814. After the battle, there were 45 shot holes in the enemy's hull, 20 of which "were within a foot of his water line, above and below," taking on five feet of water, when Denizen helped get the Epervier seaworthy "by nightfall" and evade two more British frigates, to sail into Savannah as an American prize becoming the USS Epervier ('Hawk').
