Wet weather did not dampen the spirits of Granville residents Saturday as the
whole town turned out to honor Everett Owen Rockwell, who is retiring after 19
years as principal of the Granville Village School. Clockwise, starting at upper
left, a contingency representing the Granville Volunteer Fire Department
marches in the town parade; Christine Schultz, committee chairman, pins
boutonniere on "Rocky"; an antique car leads representatives of the 19 classes
from the Granville school which graduated under Rockwell; Rockwell greets a
group of Granville elementary students during the parade; and the Class of '80
gets a personal thank you from the retiring Granville principal.

                    <text>Retiring
Granville
principal
'1 in a ~illion'
By Christopher Plourde
Staff Writer

GRANVILLE - Wailing sirens, clowns, Granville students of all ages and more than half a dozen
parade floats brightened a short section of Route 57
Saturday to pay tribute to .retiring Granville
principal Everett 0. " Rocky" Rockwell.
Rockwell this month ends his career as principal
of the Granville Village and West Granville Schools
after 19 years of service to the community.
Almost 200 Granville residents, all of whom
seemed to be personal acquaintances of the 61year-old principal, caught Rockwell by surprise
this weekend with an "Everett 0 . Rockwell Day"
to celebrate his contribution to Granville and to see
him off as he enters a new stage of life.
A parade of colorful floats and costumes, the
"Granville Tab 'n Apple Choir," fire trucks and an
ambulance honored Rockwell Saturday afternoon.
The floats included a campsite on wheels, a
school bus with a portable toilet mounted on the
hood, a truck pulling artwork depicting scenes of
Washington D.C. and another truck adorned with
banners and momentoes recalling a field trip to
Alaska.
These referred to the popular field trips which
Rockwell initiated during his term. Rockwell is
responsible for several cross country school tours
and trips to Cape Cod as well as local camping
trips.
Almost a dozen people filled out a giant fish
costume commemorating Rockwell's "fish fry"
events to raise money for the Granville Scholarship
Funds.
During the first half of the parade, Rockwell,
seated beside his wife Miriam, reviewed the
procession from the bed of a pick-up truck.
As the parade continued, however, Rockwell left
his seat and, laughing constantly, exchanged
words, handshakes, hugs and kisses with just about
everyone in the procession.
The parade started at the town green and ended
at the front lawn of Granville Village School, where
Granville citizens treated Rockwell to some informal speech making, gifts, awards, compliments
and fond reminiscing.
Former students from the graduating classes of
each year of Rockwell's career as Granville
principal took turns at the microphone honoring
Rockwell and recalling humorous incidents which
~curred during his field trips.

                    <text>OBITUARY
Everett Owen Rockwell
March 1, 1923 – July 15, 2018
No-one who met him will be surprised to hear that Everett managed to get fired from his
first job. The fix was in to let a school board member’s son play ball with failing grades –
just tell the teacher to pass the boy. But Everett just couldn’t do it. No contract renewal
either. All children were equally special to him.
It was Everett’s joy and privilege to spend his career as an elementary school principal in
Tuftonboro, Amherst and Wolfeboro, New Hampshire; with a grand wrap-up in
Granville, Massachusetts. He was a hands-on kind of principal, which put a lot of the
administrative paperwork on his secretary. This gave him the luxury to spend most of his
time with the kids – not always popular with superintendents, or school boards, but it
always seemed to work for the students.
It also seemed that the school year just wasn’t long enough because many summers were
spent directing summer camps or running bus trips. Those bus trips were the stuff of
legends. Mim and Everett packed the gear, loaded a couple dozen 10-16 year olds with a
couple chaperones and set off on a cross country trip through the national parks and
wonders of America – or maybe ten weeks to Alaska. A generation of Granvillites share a
priceless heritage.
Everett was born in Boston, and raised in Oakland, Maine with 7 sisters and brothers in
the Baptist Church parsonage. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army Air Force, and was based
in Bury St. Edmunds, England. His father was stationed in France as a chaplain. He
found out that a plane was flying from England to landing strip near his dad, so with the
help of the flight crew, Everett went AWOL to visit for a couple days and then returned
to his base with no one the wiser.
Everett returned to Colby College after the war to finish his education under the GI bill.
After being refused readmission based on his prior poor record, he convinced the dean to
accept him, simply saying that two and a half years in England had made him a different
man. He was, and he graduated in ’48, married his childhood sweetheart, Miriam Tobin,
and began his career.
Everett worked as an educator for 36 years, but he taught his entire life. Half of his career
was spent in Granville, Mass. Upon his retirement, the town shut down Main Road for a
parade in his honor. Sixty people lovingly created a quilt commemorating his activities in
town.
Mim and Everett moved to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and Betmar Village in
Zephyrhills, Florida. They shared more than twenty years of active retirement and travel.
In addition to his children: Becky Bent and Toby, his grandchildren: Samantha and Chris
Bent, and his brother Paul; Everett has left innumerable kids of all ages enriched. A.A.

Milne’s donkey Eeyore helped encourage millions of kids to live in the moment; our
EOR did the same, up close and personal, for thousands.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Everett O. and Miriam T. Rockwell
Scholarship Fund, Granville-Tolland Dollars for Scholars PO Box 214, Granville, MA
01034. Alternatively, honor Everett by taking a young one for a walk in the woods and
explore the mysteries of this wonderful world.
A service and fellowship will be held Friday, July 20th from 2:00 – 4:00 at Bridges, 108
Littleton Road, Westford, MA., Everett’s home for the last 5 years. Family and friends
are invited to join the staff in remembering Everett.

<text>Everett O. Rockwell, (1923-2018), principal of the Granville Village School 1965-1984. <br /><br />The following was received by Ed DuBois in 2024: <br /><br />"I found this flyer in a box of photos, and rather than just throw it out I thought some might find it interesting, certainly a part of Granville's more recent history. The quality of the scan isn't great, but I expect the original was probably run off on the old Granville Village School mimeograph machine. <br /><br />Though only about 45 years ago, it gives a small glimpse of how dedicated the late Everett Rockwell, longtime principal of GVS, was to our kids. Some will remember he took the older GVS students on a cross-country field trip, in a school bus, for many years. This was a note sent home just before departure in 1979. there is a hand written note from Mr. Rockwell, at the bottom, warning of possible difficulty with fuel, due to the 1979 oil crisis, and his contingency plan. <br /><br />Many of these participants will be familiar....I'm sure some still live in the area, most would probably be approaching 59 or 60 now. <br /><br />This portion of the itinerary includes traversing Colorado, Passing through Estes Park, east portal to Rocky Mountain National Park, where Anne and I now live. After leaving Hot Sulphur Springs, they would travel across the Park on Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved mountain pass in the U.S., crossing the Continental Divide at over 12,000', (and just 5 or 10 miles from our home today...they would have likely passed our present home after coming through the park!) Our son, Mitchell Willis, was on this trip. <br /><br />I hope you find this an interesting snippet of life in Granville. (I found this picture of the bus, preparing to leave for the '81 trip, which our son Paul went on.) -Ed DuBois"</text>
