G r a n v i l l e S t a t e F o r e s t , l o c a t e d j u s t south of Route 57 near West G r a n v i l l e , c o n s i s t s
of 2,397 a c r e s o f f o r e s t e d l a n d . West H a r t l a n d Road, w h i c h r u n s t h r o u g h t h e c e n t e r of
t h e f o r e s t , p r o v i d e s t h e p r i m a r y a c c e s s . C C C - b u i l t r o a d s , t r a i l s and w a t e r h o l e s can
be found t h r o u g h o u t t h e f o r e s t but CCC r e s o u r c e s are c o n c e n t r a t e d i n two a r e a s ,
Hubbard Brook and Halfway Pond. The Hubbard Brook f a c i l i t i e s today c o n s i s t o f a
l i n e a r campground (1) e x t e n d i n g about one m i l e a l o n g t h e e a s t s i d e o f Hubbard Brook
and a s i m i l a r day use a r e a (2) a l o n g t h e west s i d e . The a r e a i s c o m p l e t e l y f o r e s t e d .
The b r o o k i s t h e major a t t r a c t i o n . Each s i d e i s s e r v e d by a paved r o a d w h i c h f o l l o w s
t h e a l i g n m e n t o f t h e o r i g i n a l g r a v e l roads b u i l t by t h e CCC.
F a c i l i t i e s are p r i m i t i v e
w i t h o n l y a p a r k i n g a r e a and p i c n i c t a b l e p r o v i d e d f o r each s i t e .
The C C C - b u i l t
s h e l t e r s , r u s t i c b r i d g e s and l a t r i n e s a r e no l o n g e r e x t a n t and t h e s u b t l e c l e a r i n g and
p l a n t i n g u n d e r t a k e n by t h e CCC has become overgrown. Comfort s t a t i o n s and p a r k
f u r n i s h i n g s ( s u c h as p i c n i c t a b l e s , e n t r a n c e gates and s i g n s ) a r e of r e c e n t
c o n s t r u c t i o n . Only t h e c o n c r e t e f o u n d a t i o n of one CCC l a t r i n e (3) was found on t h e
west s i d e o f Hubbard Brook near t h e e n t r a n c e t o t h e day use a r e a . D e s p i t e t h e absence
of s p e c i f i c CCC s t r u c t u r e s and t h e l o s s of s u b t l e landscape f e a t u r e s , t h e a r e a r e t a i n s
t h e r u s t i c q u a l i t y c o n s i s t e n t w i t h the o r i g i n a l d e s i g n .

G r a n v i l l e S t a t e F o r e s t was e s t a b l i s h e d i n t h e e a r l y 1920s when t h e s t a t e a c q u i r e d c u t
over l a n d from T i f f a n y and P i c k e t t Lumber Company. Subsequent a c q u i s i t i o n s brought
t o t a l s t a t e h o l d i n g s i n t h e a r e a t o 4,682 a c r e s by 1933 (some o f t h i s i s now p a r t o f
T o l l a n d S t a t e F o r e s t ) . T h i s p r o p e r t y was unusual f o r M a s s a c h u s e t t s s t a t e f o r e s t s i n
t h a t r e c r e a t i o n a l f a c i l i t i e s (a campground) e x i s t e d t h e r e as e a r l y as 1932.
I n 1933
P r e s i d e n t F r a n k l i n D. R o o s e v e l t c r e a t e d t h e C i v i l i a n C o n s e r v a t i o n Corps (CCC), a
f e d e r a l program t o p r o v i d e employment o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r young men and t o improve t h e
f o r e s t and r e c r e a t i o n a l r e s o u r c e s o f t h e c o u n t r y . CCC Camp SP - 4, Company 114 was
e s t a b l i s h e d a t G r a n v i l l e t h e same y e a r . U n l i k e many camps, w h i c h were under t h e
j u r i s d i c t i o n o f t h e U.S. F o r e s t S e r v i c e , Camp SP - 4 was p l a c e d under t h e a u s p i c e s of
t h e N a t i o n a l Park S e r v i c e because of t h e p o t e n t i a l f o r r e c r e a t i o n a l use a t G r a n v i l l e .
However, as a t o t h e r CCC camps, r o a d b u i l d i n g and f o r e s t r y were t h e f i r s t p r i o r i t i e s ,
w i t h s e v e r a l m i l e s of heavy duty r o a d b u i l t and many m i l e s o f t r u c k t r a i l c u t and
brushed.
A l o n g Hubbard Brook t h e campground and p i c n i c a r e a were expanded and
enhanced w i t h t r a i l s , v i s t a s , r u s t i c b r i d g e s and s h e l t e r s . Camp SP - 4 was abandoned
i n f a l l o f 1935 and t h e camp area was c o n v e r t e d t o t h e Halfway Brook campground.
S e v e r a l o f t h e r u s t i c b r i d g e s b u i l t by t h e CCC were d e s t r o y e d by f l o o d i n g t h e
f o l l o w i n g y e a r and not r e p l a c e d . Other CCC crews, i n c l u d i n g Camp SP - 24 from
R o b i n s o n S t a t e P a r k , d i d some f o r e s t r y work a t G r a n v i l l e a f t e r t h e r e s i d e n t camp was
c l o s e d . The p r e s e n t h e a d q u a r t e r s b u i l d i n g was e r e c t e d i n 1959.

b r i d g e s b u i l t b y t h e C C C w e r e destroyed b y flooding t h e following year and n o t
r e p l a c e d . Other C C C c r e w s , including Camp SP - 24 from R o b i n s o n State P a r k , d i d some
forestry w o r k a t G r a n v i l l e after t h e resident camp w a s c l o s e d . T h e p r e s e n t
headquarters building w a s erected in 1 9 5 9 .
