Beech Hill Road 0013 West Granville School
UPDATE: Today (September 21, 2022) shortly after noon the West Granville School went up for auction by the Town of Granville. An opening bid of $30,000 was sought by the auctioneer and failing to get that he sought a $25,000 bid. That also failed so he whittled his request down to $10,000 before a brave bidder finally responded. Then things got lively and the bidding climbed back up until it stalled at $50,000 and the hammer dropped at that sum.
Your Granville History reporter spoke with John Devine, a member of the successful bidder's family, as he exited Town Hall. His big smile told the story. When asked what the plan was for the school he indicated the intention is to renovate the building. This would be a big plus for West Granville, in this writer's opinion. The Devines are a contracting family with a home base in West Granville so the school is remaining in local hands.
Another member of the Devine family presently owns the adjacent property at 27 Beech Hill Road, known to most people as Ernie Sattler's old house, which is another fine historic structure which has undergone needed repairs during its current ownership.
Congratulations to the Devine family on today's purchase.

The flag is on the site where, according to legend, the Granville Minutemen held drills before going to Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War. Among them was Lemuel Haynes who grew up in West Granville and served as the first minister of the West Granville Church. He was the first ordained black Congregationalist minister in the country, a patriot dedicated to this country, and an outspoken abolitionist.

For Part One, photos and church history prior to 2000 please CLICK HERE.
