Michelle Kearns Callahan: "George James Kearns was my grandfather. He and his brothers became wards of the state and the Roach family took them in for a certain amount of time. George and Harry had a house at Hawks Hill at some point. My father, the oldest of 11 by George and my nana, Florence, built a “house” in 1940 up behind Mr. Rice’s property. They grew/harvested blueberries for years. 1960s (1968?) George thought he was dying and sold his land - 132 or 136 acres- to Mr. R. Phelan but keeping rights to use property. My grandfather outlived Mr. Phelan, who left all his property to The NE Forestry Foundation. Hunters in the wintertime would break into the cabin to use and stole many things. 20+ years Pete Hall made updates to the cabin which many of us grandkids have been enjoying! We’ve been attending The Granville Harvest for umpteen years! Well, that’s a brief glimpse into my Kearns family history."

Denis Kearns: "My dad, George Kearns, along with his brothers, Eddy and Harry, brought blueberry farming to Granville in the 30’s on Hawk’s Hill, opposite Joe LeClare’s farm on North Ln. Next, George bought the 132 acre valley from Gad Phelon along the East/West Hwy from the Blandford Rd to North Ln, used by Steve Roberts. George moved his cabin to a spot opposite a knoll where the old Phelon house once stood. Our blueberry labels were Gadsborough Blues. About 30 acres of low bush and a couple hundred cultivated high bush. Russell Phelon bought the Brunson farm on the Blandford Rd and then George sold to Russell in 1967, after I joined the service, leaving him alone, being the youngest of 11 children. Russell had brought his dad out to see his old homestead, who remembered it having a marble stoop and sure enough we dug down and retrieved it."</text>
