Union Church Proposal, 1903-1907
Description
An account of the resource
Two letters proposing that the Granville churches form a "Union Church." The 1903 letter is from David Lyman Kibbe, pastor or the Congregational Church on the hill. The 1906 letter is from Edgar Alonzo Brownell of the Methodist Episcopal Church, which at the time was meeting in the old Universalist Church building.
The 1903 Kibbe letter refers to the Baptist, Methodist and Congregational churches, while the 1906 Brownell letter refers only to the Congregational and Baptist churches.
The third letter is dated 1907 and comments that "the outlook for consolidating of the two churches is rather remote."
There is no evidence that a Union Church was ever formed and there is no reference to this proposal in Wilson's "History of Granville."
The basic issue raised by the pastors in 1903 seems to have continued, with the Methodist church ceasing activity in 1922. In 1937 the need to have a few strong churches rather than more weak churches resulted in the formation of the Federated Church, when the First Church of Christ Congregational (the church on the hill) pooled resources with the Granville Baptist Church.
Neither Edgar Brownell (1875 - 1908) nor David Kebbe (1863 - 1933) lived to see the day when their proposal, made over 30 years earlier, would come to fruition.

THE
FEDERATED
CHURCH
OF
GRANVILLE
The Federated Church of Granville, Massachusetts, is locate d
at the junction of Routes 57 and 189 in the center of the community which is 9 miles southwest of Westfield and 6 miles west
of Southwick.
The major church building is a typical New England landmark
of Colonial white clapboard design.
'
The interior of the santu-
ary is simple with an arched choir loft behind the pulpit platform and a lower platform for the communion table.
The sanctuary
seats approximately 150 and a small balcony seats about 50.
An addition called the "chapel" provides a room for church
sc~ool and group meetings, dining facilities for 88, and a modern
kitchen.
Three rooms in the basement accomrnodc1 t e some of the
church school classes and a church-time nursery.
purchased in 1961 enriches the music program.
An Allen organ
Two furnaces with
a forced hot air system provide plenty of heat when necessary.
A building program hqs been voted by the parish and is in
early stages of development.
This plan includes strengthening
the foundation, supplying more basement classrooms under the
sanctuary and enhancing the beauty of the sanctuary.
The parsonage is situated adjacent to the church facing a
newly-acquired Town Green.
It is an eight-room house with baths
upstairs and down and a small basement for storage.
It is heated
by a forced hot water system with baseboard plumbing.
Membership of the church is approximately 200 with an average of 60 attending regularly.
Two Pilgrim Fellowships meet
2.
Sunday evenings with about 30 in the Junior group and a Senior
group of ten or a dozen.
There is a very active Ladies' Aid
group which with suppers, bazaars and other events contributes
materially to the financial support of the church.
The choir has
been favorably compared with much larger groups.
The church has no indebtedness and no mortgage on any of th e
property.
The current budget is set at $11,286.00.
In 1938 The Granville Baptist and Congregational churches
formed a federation.
Each parish holds title to its own property,
which is maintained by a joint executive committee.
A special
committee is now investigating the formation of a United Church
to complete the progress toward unification begun when the federation was formed.
This committee is currently meeting with a
consulting attorney to determine the legal aspects of the unification.
A Congregational church building on the top of Granville
Hill has b ee n used for summe r services.
An executive committee conducts the business of the Federated Church.
Half of these members are elected by each denomina-
tion to s erve five-year terms in rotation.
The spiritual life of the church is under the guidance of a
board of deacons, also equally representative of the two congregations, and recently expanded to include eight members.
Deacons
assist in the service of Holy communion On the first Sunday of
each month.
An active faculty of volunteers presents a planned lesson
program to eight Church School grades and a Kindergarten.
Pro-
grams, family nights and pageants have b ee n features of the re-
-· .
ligious education program.
The Town of Granville has a population of about 900 and is
a quiet country village where one can see some of the most scenic
views of New England.
It is situated in hill country south of
the Berkshires and just north of the Connecticut line.
While it
is nearer Springfield, Mass., than Hartford, Conn., both cities
are easily reached from Granville and a Massachusetts Turnpike
exit is located in the neighboring city of Westfield, where a
Sta te Co]lege is located.
Granville has a small drum shop which made drums for the
Union Army during the Civil War and now produces toy drums and
gifts.
A box shop has expanded to make fruit boxes, industrial
pallets and many other lumber products.
products are apples and blueberries.
The major agricultural
Many thousands of bushels
of apples are stored in refrigerated storehouses to be eaten all
winter long and many sore backs result from picking or "scooping"
thousands of crates of blueberries.
Much of Granville's land is watershed for the Cobble Mountain Reservoir which supplies much of the water for the city of
Springfield.
A smaller Westfield reservoir is also located in
Granville.
The Federated Church is the only church in the community
center.
A Congregational church in West Granville five miles to
the West is used during the summer months and members are invited
to worship with the Federated Church during the rest of the year.
The Federated Church facilities are often used for such community activities as suppers, showers, fellowship dances, teas and

receptions.
The Town Hall "On the Hill" is the center of almost all
town activities, busy with town business meetings, classic "Town
Meetings," Scout, sportsmen's club and other me e tings, square
dancing class e s and dances, card parties and occasional lectur e s
films and locally produced plays.
The Village school, less than a quarter mile fron the parsonage , has a recent four-room addition and houses Grades 1
through 8.
Educational standards are high and the facilities
include a modern cafe t e ria ~nd a gymnasium available to townsp e ople for cold-weather sports activities.
atte nd Westfie ld schools by bus.
Grades 9 through 12
A small elementary school main
tains six grades in W t Granville.

and a thorough immunization program has been instituted in recent years.
Although the town of Granville has a small population and
is spread over a large area, we think it is a wonderful place
to rear a family and . a wonderful place to live and serve our
God and fellowman.

Lead on, 0 King Eternal.
The day of march has come;
Hence-forth in fields of conquest
Thy tents shall be our home;
Thro' days of preparation
Thy grace has made us strong ,
And now, 0 King Eternal.
We lift our battle song.
Lead on, 0 King Eternal.
Till sin's fierce war shall cease
And holiness shall whisper
The sweet A-men of peace;
For not with swords loud clashing,
Nor roll of stirring drums;
With deeds of love and mercy,
The hea venly kingdom comes.
Lead on, 0 King Eternal:
We fellow not with fears,
For gladness breaks like morning
Where' er Thy face appears;
Thy cross is lifted o'er us;
We journey in its light
The crown awaits the conquest;
Lead on, 0 God of might.

*Hymn - " Joyful. Joyful We Adore Thee"
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee;
Opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day.
All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest , vale and mountain,
Flowery meadow, flashing sea.
Chanting bird and flowing fountain,
Call us to rejoice in Thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest.
W ell~spring of the joy of living,
Ocean depth of happy rest.
Thou our father , Christ our Brother,
All who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other,
Lift us to the Joy divine.
Mortals, join the happy chorus
Which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o'er us,
Brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward,
Victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward
In the triumph song of life.

*The Closing Hymn -
" Saviour, Again To Thy Dear Name We Raise"
Saviour, again to Thy dear Name we raise,
With one accord our parting hymn of praise;
We stand to bless Thee ere our worship cease,
And still our hearts to wait Thy word of peace.
Grant us Thy peace upon our homeward way;
With Thee began, with Thee shall end the day ;
Guard Thou the lips from sin , the hearts from shame,
That in this house have called upon Thy Name.
Grant us Thy Peace, Lord, through the coming night,
Turn Thou for us its darkness into light;
From harm and danger keep Thy children free,
For dark and light are both alike to Thee.
G rant us Thy peace throughout our earthly life,
Our balm in sorrow, and our stay in strife;
Then , when Thy voice shall bid our conflict cease,
Call us , 0 Lord, to Thine eternal peace.

Description
An account of the resource
The Federated Church at 16 Granby Road, Granville, MA. The Federated Church was formed in 1937 when the Baptist Church at this location combined with the First Congregational Church. <br /><br />The original church building was moved across the street in the early 1800's and is now 25 Granby Road. <br /><br />The second Baptist Church building was in place until 1967 when it was taken down and replaced by the present structure. <br /><br />The present structure is the third to have stood at this site.<br /><br />The following information is courtesy of Paul Pflumm:<br /><br /><span>"I don't know if they are still there, or if the current owners know, but the big windows from the Baptist Church [the one taken down in 1937] went to the Dickinson's and then my parents bought them and used them for the back porch at 135 Barnard. The windows must have been pretty old, because the glass had bubbles and a little waviness. I thought about it when you posted about their old mill, but just couldn't remember whether the windows came out of their garage or the mill. I was maybe five, so I'm surprised I remember going to the Dickinson's to get the windows at all."<br /><br /></span>Thanks Paul!
