Ben Jones (?) With Large Tree, Probably West Granville. MA.
According to the note on the back of this photo it is Ben Jones, standing next to a very large tree. However the gentleman also resembles George Aldrich, who probably took the photo or posed in the photo and had someone else take it. The note on the back of the photo is fairly recent however the photo likely dates from about 1909.

North Lane One, Water Trough, Possibly The Last Remaining
Photos taken by Zack Meadows of what may be the last remaining water trough in Granville, 2022. These water troughs used to be marked on the old maps of Granville in the late 1800's to show travelers where they could water their horses along the roads of Granville.
There used to be a water trough along the gorge road, now Rt. 57, which was sometimes mistaken by modern travelers as an abandoned still!

Main and Granby Roads Intersection, 1957 or 1958
A photo taken at the library corner looking west southwest (see map). The library is just out of sight on the left. Main Road (it was called Maple Street in 1958) proceeds up Granville hill on the right. The buildings in the center of the photo are gone. The village green now occupies the space.
Photo by Herbert Hiers, developed Jan 1958.

Granville School Bus, 42 Water Street, Granville, Massachusetts
The Granville "school bus" proceeding west past the Noble & Cooley drum shop at 42 Water Street, Granville, Massachusetts.
This photo was taken prior to the removal of the bridge in the background, which ran between N&C buildings 14 and 15. It was removed when the old fire station was built . Most of the fire department volunteers worked at Noble & Cooley so it made sense to locate the station on the N&C premises so the volunteers could run from their work stations and to the fire station to respond to fire calls.
The old fire station still stands and houses the 1947 Ford fire truck. The old truck could barely make it up Granville Hill so eventually the new fire station was constructed behind Town Hall and the old truck replaced with bigger, faster equipment.

Trapping Catch, 1908
George Aldrich was a trapper by trade, coming to West Granville by 1908. George boarded at the Major Nelson on West Hartland Road. Major Nelson told George he could trap anything he wanted with the exception of Major's daughter, Ruth.
George did not pay heed and went on to marry Ruth. Legend has it that from then on Major Nelson would not speak directly to George even though George and Ruth lived at the Nelson farm. If Major wanted the potatoes passed at the dinner table he would ask someone other than George to request that Mr. Aldrich pass the potatoes. George was undeterred; he had his prize catch.
Attitudes toward trapping have greatly changed since 1908. Judging the practice based on today's standards is not necessarily fair. In 1908 there was still a dependency on furs for warm clothing. In subsequent years clothing technology has replaced the need for furs as a necessity in all but the most remote areas of the world, not to mention today's prevalence of artifical furs.

The Pump, 1920
Some pictures defy explanation. The obvious question here is: "Why?"
This appears to be the well pump at the old Granville Village School on Granby Road. (??)
